Hand-Building Ceramics with Tanya Bechara | Teens 13 years and over

This hand-building and sculpture class is ideal for teens looking for a tranquil, creative space to learn fundamental techniques to make and decorate clay surfaces, with a focus on surface decoration.
New students will learn basic hand-building techniques like coiling, pinch pots, and slab work building up to more complex sculptural techniques as their skills and abilities develop.
Experienced students will continue to develop and refine their skills with assisted instructions that Tanya uses in her own ceramic art practice.
All students will focus on designing their own major work receiving assistance from Tanya with instructions on construction and refining surfaces as well as creating and experimenting with smaller projects and developing further skills in surface treatments that can be effectively applied to future projects.
Students will be encouraged to find inspiration from supplied images and samples while translating those into their own unique designs and style, to express themselves while finding their own artistic voice.

What to expect
Students will learn about
- clay in its various stages of construction
- how to design and plan their projects
- how to apply and decorate with underglazes like sgraffito
- sponging techniques and brush application.
- Carving and sculpting clay
- developing an understand of glazes, glaze applications and learning about various stages of firing their projects in a kiln.
Students will be encouraged to work at their own pace ensuring projects are not rushed but are finished competently and to ensure the most aesthetically pleasing results.

This class is designed for secondary students wanting a calm, and peaceful learning experience where they can learn more technical approaches to ceramics and develop their own projects to work on as they build your skills
Materials
Included in the course fee is earthenware clay, a limited colour range of underglazes for use, and firing of your work.
If you wish to use speciality clay, glazes, other colours, or decorative items, your tutor will recommend what to buy once the course is underway.
Will my vessels be fired?
Standard pieces made as part of your course program will be fired as part of your course fee. Larger or extra pieces made in class will be fired at $7/kg. Works made outside of Art Est. studios are not able to be fired in our kiln.
