Join the incredible artist and ceramicist Niharika Hukku to learn to paint onto bisque-fired surfaces where your bisque-ware is your canvas. Niharika is known for her exquisite illustrative designs painted onto ceramics. From flowers and fish, to birds and botanicals - her work gives a new reality to hand-built and decorated ceramics. Niharika will guide you through her unique process to beautifully paint a ramen-style ceramic bowl. She will facilitate your ideation and encourage you to work with your own ideas and drawings. Inspiration can come from nature or can be graphic and/or geometric. You'll work on a pre-made bowl, so this session does not include any making of ceramics.
In this class you will:
- Learn how to create a connection between the shape of a vessel and decoration
- Discuss, plan and sketch your the artwork design for your bowl
- Work graphically in a single colour or observationally in multiple colours
- Discuss brushwork and tools
- Prepare surfaces and draw in pencil onto the surface
- Create a colour palette.
- Paint with underglazes on a bisque fired bowl
What will you achieve?
During this workshop, you will:
- Create one beautifully painted pre-made and bisque-fired ramen-style bowl
- Learn Niharika’s professional tips and tricks for painting on bisque-fired surfaces
- Learn how to use paint with underglazes
- Learn to create a colour palette
- Learn how to paint on bisque-fired clay
Multi-disciplinary artist Niharika Hukku is based in Sydney. She received a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) from the Delhi College of Art, India (2000), and has undertaken studies in ceramics and sculpture in Indonesia, Singapore and Australia.
Her work has featured in over 30 solo and group exhibitions in California, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide and Wellington.
Is this course right for me?
This is a class for all levels. Some basic drawing or painting experience is helpful.

Your work will be glazed and fired after the workshop and will be available for pickup 2 – 3 weeks later.
