Perfect for beginners or those looking to refresh their skills, this two-day workshop focuses on still-life painting techniques that bring a sense of reality and atmosphere to your work. As your paints, brushes and palettes are included in your workshop fee, this makes it a great opportunity to try oil-painting before investing in all the materials.
Under the guidance of award-winning artist Marie Mansfield—winner of the 2021 Portia Geach Memorial Award and a Finalist in the 2023 Archibald Prize—you will explore the fundamentals of tonal painting. Through exercises and demonstrations, you’ll learn to observe and depict light, tone, and proportion, starting with monochrome studies. Progressing step-by-step, you’ll master tonal colour mixing and finish the workshop by creating vibrant colour studies.
This hands-on workshop offers valuable insights, practical techniques, and the opportunity to build your skills with one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists.
What to expect
This intensive oil painting workshop for beginners will:
- Learn the basics of colour mixing, tone and form
- Be shown methods to building a painting
- Gain an understanding of tonal values, hue and chroma
- Learn about oil painting techniques by doing various exercises and painting still-life set-ups
Is this course right for me?
Suitable for those new to painting, oil painters who want to go 'back to basics' or other artists with experience in other mediums who would like to learn to paint with oils.
Material List
Use of our brushes, paints, palettes etc is included in the workshop fee.
ALL students will still need to bring:
- 3 x canvas boards of 10x12 inches (25x30cm), 12x14 inches (30x40cm), or similar (you can buy these from any art supplier or discount shop)
- Soft rags or a roll of paper towel
- One or two jam jars with lids for mixing solvents and cleaning
- Packet of sanitizing wipes: also for clean-up
- Latex gloves if you are sensitive to oil paint etc.

Our class sizes are small, ensuring you receive the individual tuition you need. We have a maximum of 12 students per class.
