This course is suitable for painters with some experience with oils, who would like to continue to evolve their practice. Over 8 weeks, you will continue to paint with oil paints through a range of subject matter of your choice and gain confidence week by week. By painting various subjects, students will explore and observe light, tone and proportion to bring a sense of reality and atmosphere to their work - as well as encourage their own vision and style.

Note: Enrollments are by application only. Send us an email with some of your works and tutor Marie Mansfield will see where you fit best.

What to expect

Your tutor, Marie Mansfield, is an award-winning artist who specialises in oils and will act as a mentor, giving you personal critique each week as you work on your project/s.

Students will continue to explore through their own practice the fundamentals of painting with oils, including:

  • How to start and finish a painting
  • How to paint a still-life of their choosing.
  • Understanding tone and how to mix colours
  • Understanding Composition

Is this course right for me?

Suitable for those with experience in oil painting or with experience in other mediums and who would like to learn to paint with oils.

Material List

Students will need to have the following:

  • Titanium White and Raw umber acrylic paint for the 'mid-tone ground' to prepare the surface for painting.
  • A painting palette (melamine approx A3 size)
  • A palette knife
  • 1 x 500ml bottle of ODOURLESS solvent
  • Rags or a roll of paper towel
  • One or two jam jars with lids for mixing solvents and cleaning up
  • You will need several canvases or canvas boards over the term. For the first class bring along a canvas or canvas board approx 10x12 inches
  • Paintbrushes: long flat brushes (synthetic) in sizes 4, 6 and 8

Oil paints
If you already have oil paints bring what you have to the first lesson. If you don't already have oil paints the following is a good selection of colours that will keep you going (small tubes are fine). Buying cheap paints is a waste of money - we recommend purchasing 'Artist' quality paints. Art Spectrum is a good economical brand. For the first lesson please bring Raw Umber and white.

Recommended list:
Titanium White or Zinc White, Ivory Black, Burnt Sienna, yellow ochre.
COOL COLOURS: Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Cerulean Blue (hue will do)
WARM COLOURS: Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue
