This course and is suitable for beginners and beyond who will gain confidence in using oils. Over this 6-week course, you will learn to paint with oil paints through a range of exercises designed to teach you the fundamentals and gain skills week by week. Students will learn to observe light, tone and proportion to bring a sense of reality and atmosphere to their work. Working mostly from still life for beginners, students will learn colour theory through practical exercises. More experienced painters are encouraged to bring their own subject matter to work on, while participating in class exercises that will help refresh their oil painting skills.

What to expect
This oil painting course for beginners will cover;
- Colour theory
- Blocking-in to final painting
- Understanding tonal values, hue and chroma
- Learn about oil painting techniques by doing various exercises and painting various still-life objects.
- Learn the basics of colour mixing, tone and form
Is this course right for me?
Suitable for those new to painting, oil painters who want to go 'back to basics' or other artists with experience in other mediums who would like to learn to paint with oils.
Material List
Students will need to have the following:
- A painting palette (flat melamine approx A3 size)
- A palette knife
- 1 x 500ml bottle of artist quality ODOURLESS solvent
- Rags or a roll of paper towel
- One or two jam jars with lids for mixing solvents and clean up
- Packet of sanitizing wipes also for clean up
- For the first class bring along two canvas boards approx 10x12 inches, 12x14inches or similar
- Paint brushes: Neef Synthetic Long Flat Brushes No.4 or 6 (these sizes will differ with a different brand). 2 of each size.
Oil paints:
Buying cheap paints is a waste of money - we recommend purchasing 'Artist' quality paints. Art Spectrum is a good economical brand. 40ml tubes will be fine.
Recommended list:
Titanium White, Ivory Black, Burnt Sienna, yellow ochre.
COOL COLOURS: Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Cerulean Blue (hue will do)
WARM COLOURS: Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue (Series 1)
